Decorations and color schemes

Poul Gernes (1925-1996) created more than a hundred site-specific works, decorations and colour schemes in various buildings; schools, offices, factories, town halls, etc. around Denmark. On this page we will prepare a list of all these site-specific works, but that is an extensive and time consuming undertaking. To begin with we have put slideshows from Herlev Hospital and Rebæk Søpark Students' Hostel and some pictures of Palads Cinema on the page.

Herlev

The Rebæk Søpark Students' Hostel

The Rebæk Søpark Students' Hostel was built in 1964. The hostel is situated in the Copenhagen suburb of Hvidovre and has 361 rooms for students from Denmark and abroad. Apart from the hostel rooms, each floor of the 7-storey building contains three communal kitchens and a lift lobby.

In the end of the 1970s the hostel had severe problems with vandalism and the visual artist Poul Gernes was called upon to decorate the hostel. His many large scale site specific works and colour schemes had proven to have a very positive effect — also on such problems.

In 1983 Poul Gernes finished his extensive decoration of the hostel. Instead of grey monotonous walls and corridors, the students now had a vigorous artistic decoration consisting of Poul Gernes' generous and colourful ornamentation outside their rooms.

In 2006/2007 the decoration of the hostel was restored by Ulrikka Gernes.

The Palads Cinema

The Palads Cinema is situated in the heart of Copenhagen. It was decorated by Poul Gernes in 1989 and has become a significant land mark.
